Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts using Magnatiles.
Materials and Prep
- Magnatiles
- Pencil and paper
- Counting objects (optional)
No specific preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Counting with Magnatiles
- Activity 2: Addition with Magnatiles
- Activity 3: Subtraction with Magnatiles
- Activity 4: Patterns with Magnatiles
Have the student count the number of Magnatiles they have. Encourage them to touch and move each tile as they count. Write down the number they count on a piece of paper.
Ask the student to choose two different colors of Magnatiles. Have them count out a certain number of tiles of each color. Then, ask them to combine the two sets of tiles and count the total number. Write down the addition equation (e.g., 3 + 4 = 7) on a piece of paper.
Give the student a certain number of Magnatiles. Ask them to remove a specific number of tiles and count how many are left. Write down the subtraction equation (e.g., 8 - 2 = 6) on a piece of paper.
Encourage the student to create patterns using different colors and shapes of Magnatiles. Ask them to describe the pattern they made and try to extend it. For example, if they create a pattern of red-blue-red-blue, ask them what comes next.
Talking Points
- Counting: "Let's count the number of Magnatiles you have. Touch and move each tile as you count."
- Addition: "Choose two colors of Magnatiles. Count how many tiles of each color you have. Now, let's combine them and count the total number."
- Subtraction: "I will give you some Magnatiles. Remove a certain number of tiles and count how many are left."
- Patterns: "Create a pattern using different colors and shapes of Magnatiles. Can you describe the pattern? What comes next?"
