Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic geography concepts through engaging in map hopscotch activities.

Materials and Prep

  • A large open space to draw the map hopscotch grid
  • Sidewalk chalk or masking tape to create the hopscotch grid
  • A small rock or beanbag to use as a marker
  • A globe or world map for reference

Activities

  • Create a Map Hopscotch Grid: Draw a hopscotch grid on the ground using chalk or masking tape. Instead of numbers, label each square with the name of a country or a geographical feature (e.g., mountains, rivers, oceans).
  • Play Map Hopscotch: Take turns hopping on the squares, calling out the name of the country or geographical feature on each square. If a player cannot name it correctly, they lose their turn.
  • Explore the Globe: Use a globe or world map to locate and learn more about the countries or geographical features mentioned during the game. Encourage the student to ask questions and share interesting facts.
  • Create Your Own Map: Provide the student with paper and art supplies to draw their own map, including countries, continents, and features they find fascinating. They can label and color their map as they wish.
