Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to explore language arts concepts through engaging activities using magnetic tiles.

Materials and Prep

  • Magnetic tiles
  • Clear surface or magnetic board
  • Optional: Magnetic letters or sight word cards

No prior knowledge or preparation is required.

Activities

  • 1. Building Words: Encourage the student to use the magnetic tiles to build simple words. They can start with their name or familiar words like "cat" or "dog".
  • 2. Storytelling: Ask the student to create a story using the magnetic tiles. They can arrange the tiles to represent characters, objects, or scenes from their story. Encourage them to share their story aloud.
  • 3. Letter Hunt: Hide magnetic letters around the room and ask the student to find them. Once they find a letter, they can place it on the clear surface or magnetic board. Help them identify the letter and its sound.
  • 4. Word Families: Choose a word family (e.g., -at, -an, -ig) and ask the student to create different words from that family using the magnetic tiles. They can change the beginning letter and sound to create new words.

Talking Points

  • Building Words:
    • "Let's use the magnetic tiles to build words. Can you find the letter 'c'? Great! Now, let's find the letter 'a'. Good job! Now, let's find the letter 't'. Excellent! We have spelled the word 'cat'."
  • Storytelling:
    • "Imagine you are a superhero. Use the magnetic tiles to create a superhero character. What color is their costume? What superpowers do they have? Can you tell me a story about your superhero using the magnetic tiles?"
  • Letter Hunt:
    • "Let's go on a letter hunt! Look around the room and find a letter. When you find one, bring it back and place it on the clear surface or magnetic board. What letter did you find? Can you tell me a word that starts with that letter?"
  • Word Families:
    • "Today, we will explore word families. Let's choose the '-at' word family. Can you find the letter 'c'? Great! Now, let's change the beginning letter to 'h'. What word did we make? That's right, 'hat'! Let's try another one."
