Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic principles of physics involved in building a first-person-view quadcopter.

Materials and Prep

  • Quadcopter kit
  • Instruction manual
  • Screwdriver
  • Batteries
  • Computer or smartphone with internet access
  • Pen and paper

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have read the instruction manual and have all the necessary materials ready.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Quadcopters
  2. Start by discussing what a quadcopter is and its basic components. Show pictures or videos of quadcopters to generate interest and excitement.

  3. Understanding Flight
  4. Explain the concept of flight and how quadcopters use four rotors to generate lift and control their movement. Discuss the role of physics in flight.

  5. Building the Quadcopter
  6. Follow the step-by-step instructions in the manual to assemble the quadcopter. Use the screwdriver to securely attach the components.

  7. Testing and Adjusting
  8. Once the quadcopter is built, insert the batteries and power it on. Test its flight capabilities in a safe and open area. Make adjustments as needed to ensure stability and control.

  9. First-Person-View Experience
  10. Explain the concept of first-person-view (FPV) and how it allows you to see what the quadcopter sees through a camera and video transmitter. Demonstrate the FPV experience using a computer or smartphone.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "A quadcopter is a type of flying machine that has four rotors."
  • "The rotors help the quadcopter to fly by creating lift, just like how wings help birds fly."
  • "Physics is the science that helps us understand how things move and interact with each other."
  • "We need to follow the instructions carefully to build the quadcopter correctly."
  • "By testing and adjusting the quadcopter, we can make sure it flies smoothly and doesn't crash."
  • "First-person-view (FPV) allows us to see what the quadcopter sees through a camera and video transmitter. It's like being a pilot inside the quadcopter!"
