Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and perform basic arithmetic operations such as addition and subtraction.
Materials and Prep
- Counting objects (e.g., blocks, buttons, or coins)
- Pen or pencil
- Plain paper or a notebook
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Counting Fun
- Activity 2: Addition with Objects
- Activity 3: Subtraction with Objects
Ask the student to count a set of objects, such as blocks or buttons. Encourage them to count aloud and point to each object as they say the number. Repeat this activity with different sets of objects to reinforce counting skills.
Have the student choose two sets of objects and ask them to count each set separately. Then, help them combine the two sets and count the total number of objects. Explain that adding two sets together gives us the total number of objects.
Using the same sets of objects as in Activity 2, ask the student to count the larger set. Then, have them remove the objects from the smaller set and count how many are left. Explain that subtracting means taking away objects and finding out how many are left.
Talking Points
- "Math is all about numbers and counting. Today, we are going to learn about adding and subtracting."
- "When we count, we say the numbers in order: 1, 2, 3, and so on. Let's practice counting together."
- "Adding means putting two sets together to find out how many there are in total. For example, if we have 3 blocks and add 2 more blocks, how many blocks do we have in total? Let's count and find out."
- "Subtracting means taking away objects and finding out how many are left. If we have 5 buttons and we take away 2 buttons, how many buttons are left? Let's count and find out."
- "Remember, counting and adding/subtracting can be fun! Let's keep practicing and exploring more math together."
