Activities

  • Read aloud: Start by reading a chapter or a few pages from the book together. Encourage the student to follow along and ask questions if something is unclear.
  • Character analysis: Ask the student to choose one character from the book and write a short paragraph describing their personality, appearance, and role in the story.
  • Create a penguin fact file: Research penguins together and create a fact file with interesting information about different penguin species, their habitats, diet, and unique features.
  • Design a penguin habitat: Using their imagination, have the student draw and describe their ideal penguin habitat. Encourage them to think about the climate, landscape, and resources needed for penguins to thrive.

Talking Points

  • Mr. Popper is the main character in the story. He is described as a painter and a dreamer. He lives with his family in a small town. One day, he receives a surprise package that changes his life.
  • The surprise package contains a penguin named Captain Cook. Mr. Popper and his family take care of Captain Cook and soon realize that he needs a companion. They receive another penguin named Greta.
  • Penguins are flightless birds that live in the Southern Hemisphere, mostly in Antarctica. They have a layer of blubber to keep them warm in cold temperatures and feathers to help them swim.
  • There are different species of penguins, such as Emperor Penguins, Adelie Penguins, and Gentoo Penguins. They have different sizes, colors, and habitats.
  • Penguins eat fish, squid, and krill. They use their beaks to catch and swallow their food. They are excellent swimmers and can dive deep into the ocean to find their prey.
  • Penguins communicate with each other through sounds, body movements, and displays. They have unique calls that help them recognize their mates and chicks.
  • Penguins build nests out of rocks or pebbles to lay their eggs. Both the male and female penguins take turns incubating the eggs and taking care of the chicks.
  • In the story, Mr. Popper and his family face challenges and adventures as they try to provide a suitable home for the penguins and keep them happy and healthy.
