Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to improve your spelling skills while having fun with marble tracks.

Materials and Prep

  • Marbles
  • Cardboard or construction paper
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Scissors

Prior knowledge: Basic understanding of spelling rules and the ability to write words.

Activities

  • Create a Marble Track Spelling Game: Cut out several strips of cardboard or construction paper. Write different words on each strip, making sure to include both easy and challenging words. Set up a marble track using household objects and ramps. Roll a marble down the track and when it reaches a word strip, you have to spell the word correctly before the marble can continue.
  • Spelling Relay Race: Divide the words you want to practice into two sets. Create a start and finish line using tape or markers. Split into two teams and line up behind the start line. Each team member takes turns running to the finish line, picking up a word card, spelling it out loud, and then running back to tag the next person. The first team to finish spelling all the words wins!
  • Marble Track Spelling Bee: Write down a list of words on separate cards. One person becomes the "caller" who holds up a word card and reads it aloud. The other person has to spell the word correctly to earn a point. Keep track of points and switch roles after a few rounds.
