Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to perform basic arithmetic calculations in Minecraft, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Materials and Prep

  • A computer or tablet with Minecraft installed
  • Paper and pencil for taking notes and solving problems
  • Prior knowledge of basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)

Activities

  • Activity 1: Counting Blocks
  • In Minecraft, ask the student to count the number of blocks they have in their inventory. Then, ask them to add or subtract a specific number of blocks and tell you the new total. Repeat this activity with different numbers to practice addition and subtraction.

  • Activity 2: Building Structures
  • Challenge the student to build a structure using a specific number of blocks. For example, ask them to build a house using 20 blocks. This activity will reinforce their understanding of numbers and quantity.

  • Activity 3: Multiplication Arrays
  • Show the student a Minecraft grid and explain that it represents an array. Ask them to create different arrays using blocks and count the total number of blocks in each array. This activity will introduce the concept of multiplication.

  • Activity 4: Division Sharing
  • Give the student a certain number of blocks and ask them to distribute them equally among a group of Minecraft characters. This activity will help them understand division as sharing equally.

Talking Points

  • Adding Blocks
  • "In Minecraft, when we add blocks, we are putting more blocks together. For example, if we have 5 blocks and add 3 more, we get a total of 8 blocks."

  • Subtracting Blocks
  • "When we subtract blocks in Minecraft, we are taking some blocks away. If we have 10 blocks and subtract 4, we will have 6 blocks left."

  • Multiplication with Arrays
  • "Sometimes in Minecraft, we can use arrays to multiply. An array is like a grid made of blocks. If we have 3 rows of 4 blocks each, we can count the total number of blocks by multiplying 3 and 4, which gives us 12 blocks."

  • Division and Sharing
  • "Division is like sharing equally. If we have 12 blocks and want to share them equally among 3 Minecraft characters, each character will get 4 blocks."
