Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a basic understanding of off-grid survival techniques and will be able to apply them in outdoor settings.

Materials and Prep

  • A notebook or journal
  • A pencil or pen
  • A backpack or bag
  • Comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for outdoor activities
  • Sunscreen and bug repellent
  • A water bottle
  • Basic first aid kit
  • Prior knowledge of basic camping skills (setting up a tent, starting a fire, etc.)

Activities

  1. Build a shelter: In a safe outdoor area, have the student use natural materials such as branches, leaves, and rocks to construct a shelter. Discuss the importance of finding a suitable location and how to maximize protection from the elements.

  2. Find and purify water: Teach the student how to locate a water source, collect water, and purify it using natural methods such as boiling or filtering. Emphasize the importance of clean water for survival.

  3. Identify edible plants: Take a walk in nature and teach the student how to identify common edible plants. Discuss the importance of proper identification and caution against consuming unknown plants.

  4. Start a fire: Demonstrate and guide the student on how to start a fire using various techniques such as friction, flint and steel, or magnifying glass. Emphasize fire safety and responsible fire management.

  5. Navigate using a compass: Teach the student how to use a compass to find directions and navigate in the wilderness. Practice orienteering exercises and set up a simple scavenger hunt.
