Objective

By the end of this lesson, the 10-11 year old homeschool student will have a basic understanding of off-grid survival techniques and be able to apply some practical skills in an outdoor setting.

Materials and Prep

  • Outdoor space or backyard
  • Basic camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, etc.)
  • Water bottles
  • A small backpack
  • Compass
  • Whistle
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight
  • Firestarter (matches or lighter)
  • Knife (with adult supervision)

Before starting the lesson, the student should have a basic understanding of outdoor safety and be familiar with the concept of survival skills.

Activities

  • Building a Shelter: Have the student research different types of shelters that can be built in the wilderness. Then, using available resources in the outdoor space, have them construct a small shelter using branches, leaves, and other natural materials.
  • Purifying Water: Discuss with the student the importance of clean drinking water in a survival situation. Teach them different methods of purifying water, such as boiling, using purification tablets, or using a water filter. Then, have them practice purifying water from a nearby stream or using a water source in the backyard.
  • Orienteering: Teach the student how to use a compass and read a map. Set up a simple orienteering course in the outdoor space with markers or hidden objects. Have the student navigate through the course using the compass and map.
  • Fire Building: Explain the importance of fire in a survival situation, including providing warmth, cooking food, and signaling for help. Show the student different fire building techniques, such as using a fire starter, tinder, and kindling. Then, have them practice building a fire in a safe designated area.

Talking Points

  • Shelter: "In a survival situation, having a shelter is important to protect yourself from the elements. Different types of shelters include lean-tos, debris huts, and tents."
  • Water: "Finding clean drinking water is crucial for survival. Remember to purify water by boiling it or using purification tablets to remove harmful bacteria and viruses."
  • Orienteering: "Knowing how to use a compass and read a map can help you navigate and find your way in the wilderness. Remember, the needle of the compass always points to the north."
  • Fire Building: "Fire can provide warmth, cook food, and signal for help. Start a fire by gathering tinder, kindling, and using a fire starter or matches. Always make sure to have adult supervision."
