Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to improve their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills while exploring their interest in cats.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen/pencil
  • Paper
  • A book about cats (fiction or non-fiction)

Prior knowledge required: Basic reading skills

Activities

  1. Reading Time: Have the student read a book about cats for 20-30 minutes. Encourage them to choose a book that matches their reading level and interests.
  2. Character Study: Ask the student to choose a cat character from the book and write a paragraph describing their appearance, personality, and behavior.
  3. Plot Summary: Have the student write a short summary of the book, including the main events and how the story ended. Encourage them to use their own words and express their opinion about the book.
  4. Cat Comparison: Ask the student to compare and contrast a domestic cat with a wild cat of their choice. They can create a Venn diagram or write a short paragraph highlighting the similarities and differences between the two.
  5. Cat Quiz: Create a list of 10-15 cat-related questions (e.g., breeds, behaviors, famous cats) and have the student answer them. You can make it a fun competition by keeping score and offering a small reward for a high score.
