Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic algebraic concepts through hands-on activities using Legos.

Materials and Prep

  • Legos (various sizes and colors)
  • A flat surface to build on

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of counting and recognizing different colors.

Activities

  1. Counting Legos: Start by counting how many Legos you have in total. Practice counting from 1 to the total number of Legos.
  2. Sorting Legos: Sort the Legos by color. Create groups of Legos based on their color. Count how many Legos are in each group.
  3. Patterning with Legos: Create simple patterns using different colors of Legos. For example, build a pattern using red, blue, red, blue, and so on. Ask the student to continue the pattern.
  4. Addition and Subtraction with Legos: Use the Legos to practice basic addition and subtraction. Start with a certain number of Legos and add or remove Legos to understand the concept of adding and taking away.

Preschool Grade Talking Points

  • "We are going to learn about numbers and shapes using Legos today!"
  • "Let's count how many Legos we have. Can you say the numbers with me?"
  • "Now, let's sort the Legos by color. Can you find all the red Legos? How many red Legos do we have?"
  • "Look at the pattern I made with the Legos. Can you continue the pattern for me?"
  • "Now, let's do some adding and taking away. If I have 3 Legos and I add 2 more, how many Legos do I have in total?"
