Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts through fun horse-themed activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Activities

  • Activity 1: Horse Speed Calculation

Ask the student to research the top speeds of different horse breeds. Then, have them calculate the average speed of three different horses by finding the mean of their top speeds. Encourage them to use addition and division to solve the problem.

  • Activity 2: Horse Feed Calculation

Provide the student with a scenario where they need to calculate the amount of feed required for a group of horses. Give them the total weight of the horses and the recommended amount of feed per pound of body weight. Have them use multiplication to find the total amount of feed needed.

  • Activity 3: Horse Jumping Heights

Present the student with a list of different jumping heights for a horse competition. Ask them to determine the difference in height between two given jumps by using subtraction. They can also practice converting the heights from feet to inches or vice versa.

Talking Points

  • Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and basic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • When calculating the average speed of horses, we add up their top speeds and then divide the sum by the number of horses. This gives us the mean or average speed.

  • When calculating the amount of feed required for horses, we multiply the total weight of the horses by the recommended amount of feed per pound of body weight. This gives us the total amount of feed needed.

  • Subtraction is used to find the difference between two numbers. In the context of horse jumping heights, we subtract the height of one jump from the height of another to determine the difference.

  • It's important to understand and apply arithmetic concepts in real-life situations, such as horse-related scenarios, to see the practical use of math in everyday life.
