By the end of this lesson, the preschool student will be able to ride a tricycle independently and understand basic safety rules related to riding a tricycle.

Materials and Prep

  • A tricycle
  • A safe and open space for riding
  • A helmet
  • Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the tricycle is in good working condition and the riding area is free of any obstacles or hazards.

Activities

  1. Warm-up: Begin by stretching and warming up the body. Encourage the student to do simple exercises like jumping jacks or marching in place.
  2. Introduction to the tricycle: Show the tricycle to the student and explain its parts, such as the handlebars, pedals, and seat. Demonstrate how to sit properly on the tricycle and hold the handlebars.
  3. Balancing practice: Have the student practice balancing on the tricycle while seated. Encourage them to keep their feet on the ground and use their body to maintain balance.
  4. Pushing and gliding: Teach the student how to push off the ground with their feet and glide forward on the tricycle. Start with short distances and gradually increase the distance as the student gains confidence.
  5. Turning and steering: Introduce the concept of turning and steering the tricycle. Teach the student how to lean their body and turn the handlebars to change direction.
  6. Safety rules: Discuss basic safety rules related to riding a tricycle, such as wearing a helmet, staying in designated riding areas, and looking out for obstacles or other people.
  7. Independent riding: Once the student feels comfortable and confident, encourage them to ride the tricycle independently. Provide guidance and support as needed.
