Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to demonstrate basic techniques and movements in contemporary dance.

Materials and Prep

  • Comfortable clothing
  • Enough space to move around
  • Music player with upbeat contemporary music

No prior knowledge or experience in dance is required.

Activities

  1. Warm-up: Start by doing some light stretching exercises to warm up the body. Focus on stretching the arms, legs, and torso.

  2. Isolation exercises: Teach the student how to isolate different body parts, such as the head, shoulders, chest, and hips. Practice moving each body part independently and then combining them together in a fluid motion.

  3. Basic contemporary dance movements: Introduce the student to basic contemporary dance movements, such as spirals, contractions, and extensions. Demonstrate each movement and have the student practice them individually.

  4. Choreography: Create a short dance routine using the movements learned. Play some upbeat contemporary music and guide the student through the routine, allowing them to express their creativity and style.

  5. Cool-down: End the lesson with some gentle stretching exercises to cool down the body and prevent any muscle soreness.
