Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using Minecraft-themed activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Minecraft-themed flashcards (you can create your own or find printable ones online)
  • Access to a computer or tablet with Minecraft installed (optional)

Activities

  1. Create a Minecraft-themed flashcard deck with numbers from 1 to 10. Make sure to include visual representations of Minecraft objects for each number.
  2. For example, for the number 5, you can draw five Minecraft diamonds on the flashcard.

  3. Play a memory game with the flashcards. Shuffle the deck and place the cards face down. Take turns flipping two cards at a time and trying to match the numerical value with the corresponding Minecraft object.
  4. For instance, if you flip a card with the number 3 and another card with three Minecraft swords, you have made a match!

  5. Use the Minecraft objects on the flashcards to practice addition and subtraction. Choose two cards and ask the student to count how many objects are on each card. Then, ask them to add or subtract the numbers to find the total or the difference.
  6. For example, if you choose a card with 4 Minecraft axes and another card with 2 Minecraft pickaxes, ask the student to add the numbers together to find the total number of objects.

  7. If you have access to Minecraft on a computer or tablet, create a simple structure using Minecraft blocks. Ask the student to count how many blocks were used to build the structure.
  8. For instance, if you build a small house using 7 blocks, ask the student to count and tell you the number of blocks used.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "In Minecraft, we can use numbers to count and do math just like in real life!"
  • "Let's practice counting using Minecraft objects. Look at this flashcard with Minecraft diamonds. How many diamonds do you see?"
  • "Now, let's play a memory game with our flashcards. Can you find the matching pairs of numbers and Minecraft objects?"
  • "Great job! Now, let's use the Minecraft objects on the flashcards to practice addition and subtraction. Can you tell me how many objects there are in total or how many are left after we take some away?"
  • "If we have a structure in Minecraft, we can count the blocks used to build it. Can you count how many blocks were used in this small house?"
