Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic calculus concepts in a fun and engaging way. You will also be able to see the connection between calculus and contemporary dance.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Calculator (optional)
  • No prior knowledge of calculus is required

Activities

  • Activity 1: Dance Steps and Rates of Change
Explore the concept of rates of change by analyzing different dance steps. Choose a few dance steps from contemporary dance routines and discuss how the speed or direction of movement changes during each step. Have the student calculate the average rate of change for each step and discuss how it relates to the movement.
  • Activity 2: Dance Choreography and Derivatives
Create a simple dance routine together and identify key moments where the movement changes. Introduce the concept of derivatives by explaining that it represents the rate of change at a specific point. Help the student understand how derivatives can be used to analyze the smoothness or sharpness of movements in dance choreography.
  • Activity 3: Dance and Integration
Explore the concept of integration by discussing how it can be used to find the total distance covered during a dance routine. Analyze a short dance sequence and identify individual movements. Help the student understand that integration can be used to add up all the small distances covered during each movement to find the total distance traveled.

Talking Points

  • Rates of Change: "Rates of change help us understand how quickly something is changing. In dance, we can think of them as how fast or slow a movement is happening."
  • Derivatives: "Derivatives tell us the rate of change at a specific moment. In dance, they help us analyze how smooth or sharp a movement is. For example, a sharp turn would have a high derivative."
  • Integration: "Integration helps us find the total distance covered during a dance routine. It adds up all the small distances covered during each movement. It's like finding the sum of all the steps in a dance."
  • Connecting Calculus and Dance: "Calculus is a powerful tool that can be used to understand and analyze various aspects of dance. By using calculus concepts, we can appreciate the beauty and complexity of dance in a new way."
