Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to solve arithmetic problems related to weather, such as temperature and rainfall.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Plain paper or a notebook
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Temperature Fun
Go outside and observe the temperature. Write down the temperature in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit. Then, come back inside and convert the temperature to the other unit of measurement. For example, if it is 25 degrees Celsius, convert it to Fahrenheit. Use the formula: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. Write down your calculations and compare the temperatures in both units.
-
Activity 2: Rainfall Math
Look up the rainfall data for your city or a nearby location for the past week. Write down the amount of rainfall in millimeters or inches for each day. Add up the total rainfall for the week and calculate the average rainfall per day. For example, if the total rainfall for the week is 50 millimeters, divide it by 7 to find the average rainfall per day. Write down your calculations and analyze the rainfall patterns.
Talking Points
-
Temperature:
-
"Temperature tells us how hot or cold something is."
-
"We can measure temperature using degrees Celsius (°C) or degrees Fahrenheit (°F)."
-
"To convert temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply it by 9/5 and add 32."
-
-
Rainfall:
-
"Rainfall is the amount of rain that falls in a specific area."
-
"We measure rainfall in millimeters or inches."
-
"To find the total rainfall for a period of time, we add up the amounts for each day."
-
"To find the average rainfall per day, we divide the total rainfall by the number of days."
