Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using Legos.

Materials and Prep

  • Legos (various sizes and colors)
  • Number cards (0-10)
  • Counting mat (optional)

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a good collection of Legos and number cards ready.

Activities

  1. Counting with Legos: Start by counting the number of Legos you have. Lay them out on a flat surface and practice counting from 1 to the total number of Legos.
  2. Addition with Legos: Take two different colors of Legos and place them in separate piles. Use the number cards to randomly select two numbers and add the corresponding number of Legos from each pile. Count the total number of Legos to find the sum.
  3. Subtraction with Legos: Similar to addition, take two different colors of Legos and place them in separate piles. Use the number cards to randomly select two numbers and subtract the corresponding number of Legos from each pile. Count the remaining Legos to find the difference.
  4. Pattern Building: Use Legos to create simple patterns (e.g., red, blue, red, blue). Encourage the student to continue the pattern and discuss the concept of repetition.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to have fun with Legos while practicing our math skills!"
  • "Let's start by counting the Legos. Can you count them out loud with me?"
  • "Now, we are going to add Legos together. I will pick a number card, and you add that many Legos from each pile. Then, we will count the total number of Legos."
  • "Next, we will subtract Legos. I will pick a number card, and you subtract that many Legos from each pile. Then, we will count the remaining Legos."
  • "Lastly, let's create some patterns with Legos. We can use different colors to make a repeating pattern. Can you continue the pattern after me?"
