Objective

By the end of this lesson, the homeschool student will have a basic understanding of driving a four wheeler and be able to safely operate one.

Materials and Prep

  • A four wheeler
  • A helmet
  • A large open space for practice
  • Knowledge of basic traffic rules and signs

Activities

  1. Introduction to the four wheeler:

    • Show the student the different parts of a four wheeler and explain their functions.
    • Discuss the importance of safety equipment, such as helmets, and how to properly wear them.
  2. Basic controls and starting the four wheeler:

    • Explain the purpose and function of each control, such as the throttle, brakes, and ignition.
    • Guide the student on how to properly start the four wheeler and familiarize them with the starting process.
  3. Practice riding in a controlled environment:

    • Choose a large open space with minimal obstacles for the student to practice riding.
    • Guide the student on how to properly mount and dismount the four wheeler.
    • Teach the student how to accelerate, brake, and steer safely.
    • Encourage the student to practice these skills while maintaining control and balance.
  4. Understanding traffic rules and signs:

    • Explain the importance of following traffic rules and signs while riding a four wheeler.
    • Discuss common traffic signs and their meanings.
    • Emphasize the need to be aware of other vehicles and pedestrians while riding.
  5. Review and evaluation:

    • Ask the student to summarize what they have learned about driving a four wheeler.
    • Provide feedback on their performance and offer suggestions for improvement.
