Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the safe use of medicines and apply that knowledge to their daily lives.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Printouts of medicine labels (can be found online)
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research

Before starting the lesson, make sure the student has a basic understanding of reading and writing.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Medicine Label Detective

Give the student a few medicine labels (make sure they are safe and appropriate for their age). Ask them to identify and write down important information such as the name of the medicine, dosage instructions, and any warnings or precautions.

  2. Activity 2: Research Time

Allow the student to use a computer or tablet to research common medicines, their uses, and potential side effects. Encourage them to take notes and share interesting findings with you.

  3. Activity 3: Create a Poster

Ask the student to design a poster that promotes safe use of medicines. They can include key information they have learned, colorful illustrations, and catchy slogans.

Talking Points

  • Medicines are substances that can help us feel better when we are sick or in pain. They come in different forms like pills, syrups, or creams.

  • Always ask an adult before taking any medicine. They will help you understand if it is safe for you and how much you should take.

  • Read the medicine label carefully. It tells you important information like the name of the medicine, how much to take, and when to take it.

  • Never take someone else's medicine. Medicines are specific to each person and what works for one person may not work for another.

  • Some medicines may have side effects, which are things that can happen to your body when you take them. If you notice any strange or uncomfortable feelings, tell an adult right away.

  • Keep medicines in a safe place, out of reach of younger siblings or pets. They can be dangerous if taken by accident.

  • If you have any questions or concerns about a medicine, don't hesitate to ask an adult or a healthcare professional. They are there to help you.
