Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts while having fun with Blokes.

Materials and Prep

  • Blokes (building blocks)
  • Paper and pencil

Prior knowledge: Understanding of numbers and basic addition and subtraction.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Blokes Addition
  • Use Blokes to create two towers of different heights. Count the number of Blokes in each tower and add them together to find the total.

  • Activity 2: Blokes Subtraction
  • Create a tower of Blokes and remove some of them. Count the remaining Blokes to find the difference between the original and final number.

  • Activity 3: Blokes Multiplication
  • Create an array of Blokes, for example, a rectangle with 4 rows and 3 columns. Count the total number of Blokes in the array to find the product.

  • Activity 4: Blokes Division
  • Create a large tower of Blokes and divide them equally among a group of Bloke characters. Count the number of Blokes each character receives to find the quotient.

Talking Points

  • Addition: "When we add numbers, we are combining them to find the total. Just like when we add the number of Blokes in two towers, we count them all to find how many Blokes there are in total."
  • Subtraction: "Subtraction is when we take away or remove some numbers from a group. When we remove some Blokes from a tower, we count the remaining Blokes to find how many are left."
  • Multiplication: "Multiplication is a way of adding groups of the same number. For example, if we have 4 rows of 3 Blokes each, we can count all the Blokes to find the total number."
  • Division: "Division is when we share or divide a group into equal parts. If we have a big tower of Blokes and we want to give each Bloke character the same number, we count how many Blokes each character receives."
