Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to use Google Earth to explore different locations and write a short descriptive paragraph about a place of their choice.

Materials and Prep

  • A computer or tablet with internet access
  • Google Earth website or app
  • Paper and pencil

Activities

  1. Introduction to Google Earth:

Show the student how to access Google Earth on the computer or tablet. Explain that Google Earth is a tool that allows us to explore different places around the world.

  2. Explore a Familiar Location:

Ask the student to think of a place they are familiar with, such as their home, school, or a nearby park. Guide them in using Google Earth to find and explore that location. Encourage them to take note of interesting features or landmarks.

  3. Explore an Unfamiliar Location:

Next, ask the student to choose a location they have never been to before. Help them search for a place they find interesting, such as a famous landmark, a different country, or an animal habitat. Let them explore the location on Google Earth and ask them to describe what they see.

  4. Write a Descriptive Paragraph:

Using the notes they took while exploring the unfamiliar location, ask the student to write a short descriptive paragraph about the place. Encourage them to use adjectives and descriptive language to paint a vivid picture for the reader.
