Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create your own scrunchies using basic sewing techniques.
Materials and Prep
- Fabric (cotton or any desired material) - at least 1/4 yard
- Elastic - 1/4 inch wide, approximately 8-10 inches long
- Scissors
- Pins
- Needle and thread (matching the fabric)
- Sewing machine (optional, if available)
No prior sewing experience is required for this lesson. However, if you have never used a sewing machine before, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the basic functions and safety precautions.
Activities
Choose your fabric: Select a fabric that you like and that will work well for making scrunchies. Consider the color, pattern, and texture.
Cut the fabric: Measure and cut a rectangle of fabric, approximately 4-5 inches wide and 20-22 inches long. This will be the main piece for your scrunchie.
Sew the long edge: Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, with the right sides facing each other. Pin the long edge together and sew a straight line along the pinned edge, leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Remove the pins as you go.
Turn it inside out: Carefully turn the fabric tube inside out so that the right side is now facing out. Use a pencil or a chopstick to help push out the corners and make the tube smooth.
Insert the elastic: Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and use it to guide the elastic through the fabric tube. Make sure the other end of the elastic is secured, so it doesn't get pulled all the way through.
Sew the ends: Overlap the ends of the elastic by about 1/2 inch and sew them together securely. Then, sew the open ends of the fabric tube together, enclosing the elastic.
Final touches: Trim any excess fabric and thread. Give your scrunchie a gentle tug to distribute the gathers evenly.
