Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a nature photography project that will last for 100 hours, showcasing their creativity and observation skills.

Materials and Prep

  • A camera (can be a smartphone camera if available)
  • Access to a natural environment (backyard, local park, etc.)
  • Comfortable clothing and shoes for outdoor exploration
  • Optional: Tripod or stabilizer for steady shots

No prior knowledge or experience is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Exploration Walk: Encourage the student to take a walk in their chosen natural environment, observing and capturing interesting elements of nature through their camera lens. They can experiment with different angles, perspectives, and compositions.
  2. Macro Photography: Introduce the concept of macro photography, where the student can focus on capturing close-up details of plants, insects, or other small natural objects. They can experiment with depth of field and capturing intricate textures.
  3. Seasonal Changes: Encourage the student to document the changes that occur in nature over the course of the 100 hours. They can capture the same location or subjects at different times to showcase the transformations that take place.
  4. Storytelling through Photography: Guide the student to create a series of photographs that tell a story or convey a specific theme related to nature. They can experiment with different visual storytelling techniques, such as juxtaposition, leading lines, or color contrasts.
  5. Nighttime Photography: Discuss the possibilities of capturing the beauty of nature at night. Teach the student about long exposure photography and how it can be used to capture stars, moonlit landscapes, or nocturnal animals.
