Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to analyze and compare different types of texts, such as chapter books, comics, and articles, while exploring topics related to science, weather, cooking, rockets, and LEGO.

Materials and Prep

  • Chapter books
  • Comics
  • Articles or short texts related to science, weather, cooking, rockets, and LEGO
  • Paper and pencils

Before the lesson, make sure you have gathered the materials mentioned above. Familiarize yourself with the content of the texts you will be using.

Activities

  1. Start by selecting a chapter book, comic, or article related to one of your interests, such as science, weather, cooking, rockets, or LEGO. Read the text and take notes on the main ideas and any interesting facts or details.

  2. Next, choose another text from a different genre or topic. Compare and contrast the two texts, looking for similarities and differences in their style, content, and purpose.

  3. Now, imagine you are a character from one of the texts you read. Write a short diary entry or journal entry from the perspective of that character. Include details about their experiences, thoughts, and feelings.

  4. After completing your diary entry, create a comic strip or storyboard that illustrates a scene or event from the text. Use your artistic skills to bring the characters and setting to life.

  5. Finally, share your diary entry and comic strip with someone else. Discuss the differences in interpretation and perspective between your work and the original text.
