Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply mathematical concepts to hip hop dancing, such as counting beats, measuring distances, and understanding patterns.

Materials and Prep

  • Open space for dancing
  • Music with a clear beat
  • Ruler or measuring tape

No prior knowledge of math or hip hop dancing is required.

Activities

  • Counting Beats: Listen to a hip hop song and practice counting the beats. Start with slower songs and gradually increase the tempo. Challenge yourself by clapping or tapping your feet to the beat.
  • Measuring Distances: Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure the length of your dance moves. Measure how far you can jump, how long your arm span is, or the height of your jumps. Compare and analyze the measurements to see if there are any patterns.
  • Creating Patterns: Create your own hip hop dance routine using different moves. Experiment with creating patterns by repeating certain moves or sequences. Explore how changing the pattern affects the overall routine.

Talking Points

  • "Math is everywhere, even in hip hop dancing!"
  • "Counting the beats in a song helps us stay in rhythm."
  • "Measuring distances can help us understand our movements and improve our technique."
  • "Patterns in dance routines make them interesting and memorable."
  • "By experimenting with different patterns, we can create unique and exciting dance routines."
  • "Mathematics can enhance our creativity and help us express ourselves through dance."
