Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to build creative structures using Legos and understand the principles of engineering and design.

Materials and Prep

  • Various Lego sets or loose Lego bricks
  • A clear workspace
  • A computer or tablet with internet access (optional)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  • Free Build: Start by allowing yourself to freely build whatever comes to mind. Experiment with different shapes, colors, and structures. Let your creativity flow!
  • Challenge Build: Set a specific challenge for yourself, such as building a bridge that can hold a certain weight or creating a vehicle with functional wheels. Push your problem-solving skills to the limit!
  • Research and Design: Use the internet or books to research famous architectural structures or engineering marvels. Select one that inspires you and try to recreate it using Legos. Pay attention to the details and proportions.
  • Collaborative Build: Invite a family member or friend to join you in a Lego building challenge. Work together to build something amazing, combining your ideas and skills.
  • Stop Motion Animation: If you have a smartphone or tablet, try creating a stop motion animation using Legos as characters or props. Plan a short story, take sequential photos, and use a stop motion app to bring your Lego creations to life!

Talking Points

  • "Engineering is all about using science and math to solve problems and create useful things. Legos can help us understand the basics of engineering."
  • "When building with Legos, it's important to think about the forces acting on your structure. How can you make it stable and able to withstand weight or pressure?"
  • "Design is an essential part of any building process. What colors and shapes will you use? How can you make your creation visually appealing?"
  • "Collaboration is an important skill in the real world. By working with others on a Lego project, you can learn to share ideas, compromise, and build something even better than you could on your own."
  • "Stop motion animation is a fun way to bring your Lego creations to life. It requires patience and attention to detail. Can you imagine making your own Lego movie someday?"
