Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basics of woodworking and complete a simple woodworking project.

Materials and Prep

  • Wooden blocks or scrap wood
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood glue
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Saw (with adult supervision)
  • Protective goggles
  • Measuring tape
  • Paint or markers (optional)
  • Apron or old clothes

Make sure to have a safe and well-ventilated workspace. Adult supervision is required for certain activities.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Woodworking: Talk about what woodworking is and show the different tools and materials.
  2. Wood Sanding: Demonstrate how to sand the wooden blocks to smooth out any rough edges.
  3. Wood Gluing: Teach how to apply wood glue and join pieces of wood together.
  4. Nail Hammering: Show how to safely use a hammer and nails to attach pieces of wood.
  5. Wood Cutting: With adult supervision, guide the student in cutting a small piece of wood using a saw.
  6. Finishing Touches: Allow the student to paint or decorate their woodworking project (optional).
