Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic math skills while learning about basketball.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper
  • A basketball (optional)

Activities

  • Activity 1: Basketball Counting

Count how many baskets you can make in one minute. Keep track of your score on a piece of paper. Challenge yourself to beat your own record each time you play.

  • Activity 2: Shooting Percentages

Take 10 shots and record how many baskets you make. Calculate your shooting percentage by dividing the number of baskets made by the total number of shots taken. Multiply the result by 100 to get your shooting percentage as a percentage.

  • Activity 3: Math Drills

Practice addition, subtraction, and multiplication using basketball-related numbers. For example, calculate the total points scored by a team if each player scored 5 points, or find the difference in scores if one team scored 20 points and the other team scored 12 points.

Talking Points

  • Counting: "Basketball is a fun sport that involves counting. We can count how many baskets we make or how many points a team scores."

  • Shooting Percentages: "Shooting percentages help us understand how accurate we are when shooting the basketball. It's like a measure of how often we make baskets."

  • Math Drills: "Math drills can be more exciting when we use basketball numbers. We can practice addition, subtraction, and multiplication while thinking about the game we love."
