Objective

By the end of this lesson, the 4-year-old student will be able to recognize rhyme in books.

Materials and Prep

  • A selection of children's books with rhymes
  • A comfortable reading area

Activities

  • Read a rhyming book aloud to the student, emphasizing the rhyming words and encouraging them to listen for the similar sounds.

  • Ask the student to identify the rhyming words in the book by pointing to them or repeating them back to you.

  • Encourage the student to come up with their own rhyming words. For example, give them a word like "cat" and ask them to think of other words that rhyme with it.

  • Play a rhyming word game where you say a word and the student has to come up with a rhyming word. Take turns and make it fun!

  • Read another rhyming book together and have the student try to anticipate the rhyming words as you read.

Talking Points

  • "Rhyme means that words sound the same at the end."

  • "When we read books with rhymes, we can listen for words that sound the same."

  • "Rhyming words can be fun to say because they have similar sounds."

  • "We can make up our own rhyming words too! Let's think of some together."

  • "Listening for rhymes helps us enjoy and understand the story better."
