Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and calculate the area of different shapes, and apply your knowledge to create your own artwork.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Blank paper or sketchbook
- Colored pencils or markers
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Drawing Shapes
- Activity 2: Measuring Sides
- Activity 3: Calculating Area
- Activity 4: Artwork Creation
Use your pencil and ruler to draw different shapes on your paper. Try drawing squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles.
Measure the length of each side of the shapes you drew using your ruler. Write down the measurements next to each side.
Use the measurements you wrote down to calculate the area of each shape. Remember, the area of a square or rectangle is found by multiplying the length and width, and the area of a triangle is found by multiplying the base and height and dividing by 2. The area of a circle is found by multiplying the radius squared and pi (Ï€).
Now that you understand how to calculate area, create your own artwork using different shapes. Think about how you can combine and arrange the shapes to make an interesting composition. Once you're done, color in your artwork using colored pencils or markers.
