Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and calculate the area and perimeter of different shapes. You will also be able to apply these concepts in creating your own artwork.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Coloring materials (crayons, markers, etc.)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Drawing Shapes
- Activity 2: Calculating Perimeter
- Activity 3: Calculating Area
- Activity 4: Artwork Creation
Start by drawing different shapes on your paper, such as squares, rectangles, and triangles. Make sure to label the sides of each shape.
Using your ruler, measure the length of each side of the shapes you drew. Add up the lengths of all the sides to find the perimeter of each shape.
For each shape, count the number of squares that can fit inside it. Multiply the length and width of the shape to find its area.
Now that you understand how to calculate area and perimeter, use your creativity to create a piece of artwork using different shapes. Make sure to calculate the area and perimeter of your artwork as well.
Talking Points
- Shapes have different sides and angles.
- Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape.
- To find the perimeter, you add up the lengths of all the sides.
- Area is the amount of space inside a shape.
- To find the area, you multiply the length and width of a shape.
- Shapes can be used in art to create interesting and visually appealing designs.
- Understanding area and perimeter can help us plan and create our artwork more effectively.
- Calculating area and perimeter can be a fun way to challenge ourselves and test our math skills.
- Remember to be creative and have fun while creating your own artwork!
