Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to explore and learn about horses through art, math, and science activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper (various colors)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Markers or crayons
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Counting objects (e.g., buttons, beads, or small toys)
  • Printed pictures of horses
  • Access to a computer or tablet for online research (optional)

Activities

1. Horse Collage:

Let the student cut out horse shapes from construction paper and glue them onto a larger piece of paper to create a horse collage. Encourage them to use different colors and shapes to make their artwork unique.

2. Horse Measurement:

Have the student measure the length and height of different horse pictures using a ruler. Help them record the measurements on a separate piece of paper. Discuss which horse is taller or longer based on the measurements.

3. Horse Counting:

Provide the student with a pile of counting objects. Ask them to count and place a specific number of objects next to each horse picture. For example, "Place 3 buttons next to this horse." This activity will help reinforce counting skills.

4. Horse Facts:

Encourage the student to explore horse facts online or through books. Discuss interesting facts about horses, such as what they eat, where they live, and how they communicate. Ask the student to share their favorite horse fact with you.

Talking Points

  • "Horses are big animals that have four legs and a long tail."
  • "We can use different colors and shapes to make a beautiful horse collage."
  • "When we measure a horse, we can find out how tall or long it is."
  • "Counting objects helps us know how many there are. Let's count the buttons together!"
  • "Horses eat hay, grass, and sometimes carrots. They live in places called stables or pastures. They talk to each other by making sounds called neighs."
