Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create their own mermaid artwork using only the materials provided.

Materials and Prep

  • White paper or canvas
  • Watercolor paints
  • Paintbrushes
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Water cup
  • Paper towels

Before starting the lesson, make sure the student has a basic understanding of what a mermaid is and its characteristics.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Sketching the Mermaid
  2. Encourage the student to lightly sketch the outline of a mermaid on their paper or canvas using a pencil. They can use reference images or their imagination to create their own unique mermaid.

  3. Activity 2: Adding Color with Watercolors
  4. Once the sketch is complete, instruct the student to use watercolor paints to add color to their mermaid. They can experiment with different color combinations and techniques to bring their mermaid to life.

  5. Activity 3: Adding Details and Background
  6. After the watercolor paint has dried, the student can use a fine-tip brush or colored pencils to add details to their mermaid, such as facial features, scales, and hair. They can also create an underwater background using shades of blue or other colors.

  7. Activity 4: Finishing Touches
  8. Once the artwork is complete, the student can use an eraser to remove any visible pencil lines and make final adjustments to their mermaid artwork. They can also sign their name at the bottom of the artwork to mark it as their own.
