Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create their own butterfly artwork using basic art materials.

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper (various colors)
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Markers or crayons

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Butterfly Collage
  • Provide the student with different colored construction paper. Instruct them to cut out butterfly shapes using the scissors. They can then arrange and glue the butterfly shapes onto a larger piece of construction paper to create a butterfly collage.

  • Activity 2: Symmetrical Butterfly
  • Show the student a picture of a butterfly and explain that butterflies have symmetrical patterns on their wings. Provide them with a blank piece of construction paper and markers or crayons. Encourage them to draw and color a butterfly, making sure to create the same design on both sides to make it symmetrical.

  • Activity 3: Butterfly Finger Painting
  • Show the student how to dip their finger into paint and create butterfly shapes by pressing their finger onto the paper. They can use different colors to make a colorful butterfly finger painting.

Talking Points

  • Butterflies are beautiful insects with colorful wings.
  • Butterflies start their lives as tiny eggs and then turn into caterpillars.
  • Caterpillars eat leaves and grow bigger and bigger.
  • After a while, caterpillars make a chrysalis or cocoon around themselves.
  • Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly.
  • When the butterfly is ready, it breaks out of the chrysalis and spreads its wings.
  • Butterflies use their wings to fly and visit flowers to drink nectar.
  • There are many different types of butterflies, each with its own unique pattern and colors.
  • We can create our own butterfly artwork using different materials and colors.
