Objective

By the end of this lesson, the 4-year-old student will have a basic understanding and appreciation for Australia through engaging activities in Art, English, Foreign Language, History, Math, Music, Physical Education, Science, and Social Studies.

Materials and Prep

  • Blank paper
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Storybook about Australia
  • A globe or world map
  • Optional: Australian flag printout

Activities

  • Create an Australian Animal Artwork: Have the student choose their favorite Australian animal and draw a picture of it using crayons or colored pencils.
  • Read an Australian Storybook: Read a storybook about Australia to the student, discussing the characters, setting, and key events in the story.
  • Locate Australia on a Globe or Map: Show the student where Australia is on a globe or world map, emphasizing its position as a continent and its unique shape.
  • Australian Flag Coloring: If available, provide the student with an Australian flag printout and encourage them to color it in using the correct colors (red, white, and blue).
  • Counting Kangaroos: Using a picture or toy kangaroos, help the student practice counting by asking them to count the number of kangaroos they see.
  • Sing an Australian Song: Teach the student a simple Australian song, such as "Waltzing Matilda," and sing it together, encouraging movement and participation.
  • Australian Animal Movements: Choose a few Australian animals (e.g., kangaroo, koala, emu) and demonstrate their movements, encouraging the student to imitate them.
  • Explore Australian Nature: If possible, take the student outside to explore nature, looking for similarities and differences between Australian plants and animals and those in their own environment.
  • Learn about Aboriginal Art: Introduce the concept of Aboriginal art to the student, showing them examples and encouraging them to create their own artwork inspired by Aboriginal dot painting.

  • Science: "Australia is home to unique plants and animals. Let's explore our surroundings and see if we can find any similarities or differences with Australian nature."
  • Social Studies: "Aboriginal art is an important part of Australian culture. We can create our own artwork inspired by Aboriginal dot painting. What colors and patterns will you use?"
