Objective

By the end of this lesson, the 4-year-old homeschool student will be able to create simple pottery using clay, exploring different shapes and textures.

Materials and Prep

  • Non-toxic modeling clay
  • Plastic tablecloth or mat
  • Small rolling pin or toy rolling pin
  • Various small objects for texture (e.g., buttons, toy cars, leaves)
  • A clean, flat surface for working

Activities

1. Introduction to Clay: Begin by showing the student the clay and explaining that it can be shaped and molded into different things, just like playdough. Let them touch and explore the clay.

2. Rolling and Cutting: Show the student how to roll the clay into a ball and then flatten it with the rolling pin. Demonstrate how to use cookie cutters or simply cut out shapes using a plastic knife or their fingers.

3. Texture Exploration: Encourage the student to press various small objects onto the flattened clay to create different textures. Discuss the different patterns and shapes they can make.

4. Freeform Sculpting: Let the student use their imagination and create their own pottery pieces by shaping and molding the clay with their hands. Encourage them to experiment with different shapes and sizes.

Talking Points

  • "Clay is a special kind of material that we can shape and mold."
  • "We can use tools like rolling pins to flatten the clay and make it easier to work with."
  • "Look at all the different textures we can create by pressing objects onto the clay."
  • "What kind of pottery do you want to make? Let's use our hands to shape it!"
