Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basics of pottery and create your own small pot.

Materials and Prep

  • Clay
  • Water
  • Rolling pin or a cylindrical object
  • Plastic wrap
  • A smooth surface to work on
  • A small bowl of water
  • A sponge or cloth
  • A small paintbrush
  • Acrylic paints (optional)

No prior knowledge or experience is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Kneading the clay: Start by kneading the clay to make it soft and pliable. This will help remove any air bubbles and make it easier to work with.
  2. Rolling the clay: Use the rolling pin or a cylindrical object to roll the clay into a flat sheet. Make sure the surface is smooth and dust-free.
  3. Molding the pot: Cut out a circular shape from the clay sheet. Place the circular clay piece on your palm and gently press it to shape it into a pot. Use your fingers to create a desired design or texture on the pot.
  4. Smoothing the pot: Dip the sponge or cloth in water and gently smooth out any rough edges or surfaces on the pot. This will make it look more polished and professional.
  5. Drying and painting (optional): Let the pot air dry for a few hours or overnight. Once it is completely dry, you can choose to paint it using acrylic paints. Be creative and add your own unique designs!
