Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand water and airborne diseases and how they can affect our health.

Materials and Prep

  • Glass of water
  • Paper towels
  • Chart paper or whiteboard
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Internet access (optional)

Before starting the lesson, it would be helpful to have some basic knowledge about germs and how they spread.

Activities

1. Let's start by exploring how germs can spread through water. Fill a glass with water and place it on a table. Sprinkle some pepper on the water's surface. Explain to the student that the pepper represents germs. Now, ask the student to dip their finger in the water. They will notice that the pepper moves away from their finger. This demonstrates how germs can be repelled by water and why it's important to wash our hands with soap and water.

2. Next, engage the student in a drawing activity. Ask them to draw a picture of a person washing their hands. Encourage them to be creative and use different colors. Once they are done, discuss why washing hands is important in preventing the spread of waterborne diseases.

3. Now, let's move on to airborne diseases. Explain to the student that some diseases can spread through the air when someone coughs or sneezes. Demonstrate this by pretending to cough or sneeze into your elbow. Ask the student to observe how far the imaginary germs might travel. Emphasize the importance of covering our mouths and noses when we cough or sneeze.

4. Finally, engage the student in a discussion about common airborne diseases such as the flu or the common cold. Ask them if they have ever had a cold or flu and how it made them feel. Explain that these diseases are caused by tiny germs that float in the air and can enter our bodies when we breathe them in.

  • "Germs are tiny organisms that can make us sick."
  • "Some germs can be found in water, and others can be in the air."
