Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore and understand basic math concepts using Magnatiles.
Materials and Prep
- Magnatiles set
- Clear space to build
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Build Shapes: Use the Magnatiles to build different shapes such as squares, rectangles, triangles, and more. Count the number of tiles used for each shape.
- Addition Towers: Stack Magnatiles on top of each other to create towers. Start with a tower of 2 tiles, then add 1 more tile to make a tower of 3. Keep adding 1 tile at a time and count the total number of tiles in each tower.
- Pattern Creation: Create patterns using different colored Magnatiles. For example, make a red-blue-red-blue pattern. Count how many tiles of each color are used in the pattern.
- Shape Sorting: Sort the Magnatiles into groups based on their shapes. Count how many tiles are in each group.
Talking Points
- "Today, we will be using Magnatiles to learn about math!"
- "Let's start by building different shapes with our Magnatiles. Can you tell me how many tiles you used for each shape?"
- "Now, let's try some addition. We will stack the Magnatiles to create towers. Count how many tiles are in each tower as we add more."
- "Next, we can have fun creating patterns with our Magnatiles. Count how many tiles of each color we use in the pattern."
- "Lastly, let's sort the Magnatiles based on their shapes. Count how many tiles are in each group."
- "Great job today! You did an amazing job exploring math with Magnatiles. Keep up the good work!"
