Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic concepts of calculus through fun Paw Patrol activities.
Materials and Prep
- Paw Patrol toys or pictures
- Pen and paper
- Calculator (optional)
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of addition and subtraction.
Activities
- Counting Pups: Use your Paw Patrol toys or pictures and count how many pups there are in total. Write down the number.
- Addition Adventure: Choose two Paw Patrol pups and add their numbers together. Write down the equation and solve it using either mental math or a calculator.
- Subtraction Mission: Select two Paw Patrol pups and subtract the smaller number from the larger one. Write down the equation and solve it using either mental math or a calculator.
- Paw Patrol Patterns: Create a pattern using Paw Patrol toys or pictures. For example, you could arrange them in a repeating sequence of Chase, Skye, Marshall, Chase, Skye, Marshall. Describe the pattern using words and continue it for at least five more terms.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Calculus is a branch of mathematics that deals with change and motion."
- "We can use addition to find the total number of Paw Patrol pups."
- "Subtraction helps us find the difference between two numbers, like the number of pups each Paw Patrol member has."
- "Patterns are sequences that repeat in a predictable way, just like the Paw Patrol characters in our pattern."
