Objective

By the end of this lesson, the 5-year-old student will be able to understand and appreciate Valentine's Day through various art, English, history, math, science, and social studies activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper (pink, red, white)
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Markers or crayons
  • Blank paper
  • Valentine's Day storybook
  • Counting objects (candies, heart-shaped erasers, etc.)
  • Map or globe
  • Computer or tablet with internet access

Activities

  • Create Valentine's Day cards: Cut out heart shapes from the construction paper and decorate them with markers or crayons. Glue the hearts onto blank paper to make personalized cards for family members or friends.
  • Read a Valentine's Day story: Choose a Valentine's Day-themed storybook and read it together. Discuss the characters, their feelings, and the importance of showing love and kindness to others.
  • Counting hearts: Use the counting objects (candies, erasers, etc.) to practice counting and sorting. Ask the student to count how many hearts there are and group them by color or size.
  • Explore different countries: Use a map or globe to show the student where different countries are located. Discuss how Valentine's Day is celebrated in different parts of the world. Look up pictures or videos online to see how people celebrate.
  • Valentine's Day science experiment: Fill a bowl with water and drop a few conversation heart candies in it. Observe what happens to the candies over time. Discuss concepts of dissolving and color mixing.
