Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the connection between music and science, and how it relates to your interest in baseball.

Materials and Prep

  • Baseball (if available)
  • Paper and pencil
  • Access to a computer or smartphone with internet

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  • Create a Baseball Rhythm: Use your baseball or imaginary baseball to create a rhythm by tapping it on different surfaces. Experiment with different rhythms and see how they sound.
  • Research Baseball Sounds: Use your computer or smartphone to research different sounds associated with baseball, such as the crack of a bat, the sound of a ball hitting a glove, or the cheering of the crowd. Write down your findings.
  • Compose a Baseball Song: Using the rhythms and sounds you discovered, create a short song or chant that represents your love for baseball. You can use your voice, body percussion, or any other objects you find around you.
  • Perform Your Song: Practice your baseball song and perform it for your family or friends. Pay attention to the rhythm and the emotions it conveys.

Talking Points

  • Music and Science Connection: Did you know that music and science are closely related? When we create rhythms and sounds, we are actually experimenting with vibrations and frequencies, which are important scientific concepts.
  • Sound Waves: Sound travels in waves, just like waves in the ocean. These waves move through the air and vibrate our eardrums, allowing us to hear different sounds. The rhythm you create with your baseball is a type of sound wave.
  • Pitch and Frequency: The pitch of a sound is determined by its frequency. Higher frequency sounds have a higher pitch, while lower frequency sounds have a lower pitch. Can you think of any sounds in baseball that have a high pitch? How about low pitch?
  • Emotions in Music: Music can evoke different emotions. Think about how different baseball sounds make you feel. The crack of a bat might make you feel excited, while the sound of a ball hitting a glove might make you feel satisfied or relieved.
  • Expressing Your Love for Baseball: Through your song or chant, you have the opportunity to express your love for baseball. Think about the rhythms and sounds you used and how they represent your feelings towards the sport.
