Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply basic math skills in a fun and engaging way while exploring their interest in baseball.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper
- Baseball cards or pictures of baseball players (optional)
- Access to a computer or smartphone for research (optional)
Activities
Create a Baseball Lineup:
Ask the student to create a lineup of 9 players for their dream baseball team. They can assign each player a number from 1 to 9. Once the lineup is complete, have them calculate the sum of the player numbers in the lineup.
Calculate Batting Averages:
Show the student the batting averages of a few baseball players (e.g., .300, .250, .400). Ask them to calculate the average of these numbers by adding them up and dividing by the total number of players.
Home Run Math:
Ask the student to research their favorite baseball player and find out how many home runs they have hit in their career. Then, have them calculate how many more home runs the player needs to reach a milestone (e.g., 500 home runs).
Talking Points
Math is everywhere, even in baseball! We can use math to calculate player numbers, batting averages, and milestones.
When creating a lineup, we assign each player a number. We can then add up these numbers to find the total sum.
Batting average is calculated by dividing the number of hits by the number of at-bats. We can add up batting averages and divide by the number of players to find the average.
Researching our favorite baseball player's home run count allows us to calculate how many more home runs they need to reach a milestone. We subtract their current count from the milestone number to find the difference.
By applying math skills to our interest in baseball, we can have fun while strengthening our mathematical abilities!
