Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic math skills to basketball-related activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Basketball
  • Pen and paper
  • Calculator (optional)

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Shooting Percentage
  • Take 10 shots from different spots on the basketball court. Keep track of how many shots you make and how many you miss. Calculate your shooting percentage by dividing the number of shots made by the total number of shots taken and multiplying by 100.

  • Activity 2: Team Statistics
  • Choose your favorite basketball team and find their current season's statistics online. Look for categories like points per game, rebounds per game, and assists per game. Create math problems using these statistics, such as finding the team's total points scored in a given number of games or calculating the average number of rebounds per game.

  • Activity 3: Player Statistics
  • Select a basketball player you admire and find their career statistics. Calculate their career field goal percentage by dividing the total number of field goals made by the total number of field goals attempted and multiplying by 100. Compare their shooting percentage to other players or historical records.

Talking Points

  • "Math is everywhere, even in basketball! We can use math to analyze shooting percentages, calculate team statistics, and compare player performances."
  • "Let's start by understanding shooting percentage. It tells us how many shots a player makes out of the total shots attempted. We can calculate it by dividing the number of shots made by the total shots taken and multiplying by 100."
  • "To find a team's total points scored, we can add up the points they scored in each game. We can also find the average points per game by dividing the total points by the number of games played."
  • "Player statistics provide valuable insights into their performance. Field goal percentage is a measure of shooting accuracy. It tells us how many shots a player makes compared to how many they attempt."
  • "By comparing shooting percentages, we can determine which players are more efficient shooters. A higher shooting percentage usually means a player is making a higher percentage of their shots."
