Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic structure and function of the heart.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Internet access (optional)

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Heart Diagram: Draw a labeled diagram of the heart, including the major parts such as the atria, ventricles, and blood vessels.

  2. Heart Rate Measurement: Measure your heart rate at rest and after light exercise. Compare the two and note any differences.

  3. Heart Beat Sound: Use your stethoscope (or make one using a paper towel roll) to listen to your heartbeat. Pay attention to the lub-dub sound it makes.

Talking Points

  • What is the heart? The heart is a vital organ in our bodies that pumps blood to all parts, delivering oxygen and nutrients.

  • How does the heart work? The heart has four chambers: two atria and two ventricles. It contracts and relaxes in a rhythmic pattern to pump blood throughout the body.

  • What is the purpose of blood vessels? Blood vessels, such as arteries and veins, transport blood to and from the heart. Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart, while veins bring deoxygenated blood back to the heart.

  • Why is measuring heart rate important? Heart rate is a measure of how fast your heart beats per minute. It can indicate your overall health and fitness level.

  • What causes the lub-dub sound? The lub-dub sound is made by the closing of the heart valves. The "lub" is the sound of the atrioventricular valves closing, and the "dub" is the sound of the semilunar valves closing.
