Objective
By the end of this lesson, the 3-year-old student will be able to understand the concept of sharing and division through the story "The Doorbell Rang".
Materials and Prep
- The book "The Doorbell Rang" by Pat Hutchins
- A small plate or tray
- 10 small objects (e.g., buttons, toy cars, blocks)
Activities
1. Read the story "The Doorbell Rang" to the student, emphasizing the concept of sharing and division.
2. After reading, engage the student in a hands-on activity. Place the 10 small objects on the plate or tray.
3. Encourage the student to pretend to be the characters in the story and act out the sharing and division. For example, say, "Let's pretend you are the child in the story. How would you share these objects with your friends?"
4. Guide the student to divide the objects equally among imaginary friends. Count the objects together to ensure equal distribution.
5. Repeat the activity multiple times, encouraging the student to divide the objects in different ways.
Talking Points
- "In the story, the children had some cookies. They wanted to share them with their friends. Sharing means giving some of what you have to someone else."
- "When we share, we divide things equally. Let's pretend these objects are cookies. How many friends do you have? Let's give each friend the same number of cookies."
- "Count the objects together. One for you, one for your friend, one for another friend, and so on. Keep going until all the objects are shared."
- "You did a great job sharing and dividing! Now, let's try again and divide the objects in a different way."
- "Sharing and dividing is a way to make sure everyone gets a fair share. It's important to be kind and share with others."
