Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use your creativity and problem-solving skills to build unique structures with blocks.

Materials and Prep

  • Various types of blocks (wooden, plastic, or foam)
  • A large open space to build
  • A timer or stopwatch

Before starting the lesson, make sure the blocks are clean and organized. Familiarize yourself with the different types of blocks and their shapes.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Free Build
Build whatever you like with the blocks. Let your imagination run wild and create unique structures. Experiment with different shapes and sizes of blocks.
  • Activity 2: Building Challenge
Set a timer for a specific amount of time (e.g., 5 minutes) and challenge yourself to build the tallest tower or the longest bridge using the blocks. See how high you can go or how far you can stretch your bridge before it collapses.
  • Activity 3: Storytelling Structures
Build a structure that represents a scene from your favorite story or create your own story using the blocks as characters or objects. Use your imagination to bring your story to life.

Talking Points

  • What are blocks?
"Blocks are small objects made of different materials like wood, plastic, or foam. They come in different shapes and sizes and can be stacked or connected together to build structures."
  • Why do people play with blocks?
"Playing with blocks helps us develop our creativity, problem-solving skills, and spatial awareness. It allows us to explore different possibilities and build unique structures."
  • What can you build with blocks?
"You can build all sorts of things with blocks, like towers, houses, bridges, or even imaginary objects. The only limit is your imagination!"
  • What is the challenge in building tall towers or long bridges?
"The challenge is to balance the blocks and make sure they don't fall. You need to think about the stability of the structure and how the blocks fit together."
  • How can you use blocks to tell a story?
"You can use blocks as characters, objects, or settings in your story. By arranging the blocks in different ways, you can create scenes and bring your story to life."
