Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basics of astronomy and have a greater appreciation for the wonders of the universe.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Access to a computer with internet
  • No prior knowledge required

Activities

  1. Create a Solar System Model

Using various materials such as Styrofoam balls, paint, and string, create a scale model of the solar system. Use your research skills to accurately represent the sizes and distances between the planets. Be creative and have fun!

  2. Stargazing

On a clear night, find a comfortable spot outside away from city lights. Use a star chart or a stargazing app to identify different constellations and stars. Take notes on what you observe and any questions that come to mind.

  3. Research a Celestial Object

Choose a celestial object that interests you, such as a nebula, galaxy, or a specific planet. Conduct research using reliable sources to gather information about its characteristics, formation, and significance. Create a presentation or a written report to share your findings.
